Enviro-Mich message from Larry Nooden <ldnum@umich.edu>
-------------------------------------------------------------------------
That's the title of an article in the August 30, 2008 issue of Science News
(174: 16-20, 2008).
"The eruption in 1600 of a seemingly quiet volcano (Huaynaputina) in Peru
changed global climate and triggered famine as far away as Russia."
Given the Bush Admin response to the Katrina disaster in New Orleans and
the number of ideological government appointees (Brownies doing a heckuva
job), it seems unlikely that there has been any preparation for or even
interest in major catastrophes like this.
Indeed, many of our leaders (apparently including the President) expect an
apocalypse during their lifetime, and they would go into ecstasy on their
way to heaven, so they would be less concerned about this or other long
range environmental issues.
