PORT ONEIDA -- The National Park Service at Sleeping Bear Dunes National Lakeshore completed an environmental assessment for the Port Oneida Rural Historic District.
Plans include the historic preservation and use of some of the buildings and landscapes in the northern Leelanau County community of Port Oneida, along with the development of some visitor access facilities.
The federal agency found no significant impacts would result from the plans and also finished a document with responses to public comments.
Officials will use the Kelderhouse farm for a visitor contact station, while the Charles Olsen house will offer complementary interpretive services and offices for Preserve Historic Sleeping Bear. The Goffar farm was chosen as the eventual location of employee, intern and volunteer housing.
The Port Oneida Rural Historic District is representative of late 19th and early 20th century farms and is one of the largest historic agricultural districts in the country's public ownership.
