Dear MEEA Members, Supporters, and Allies:

The Senate Appropriations Committee is currently debating the Stimulus Package that was passed by the U.S. House of Representatives earlier this week.  The Senate draft has significantly lowered the efficiency provisions that passed by the House.

MEEA, as a member of National SAVE Energy Coalition, has stressed the importance of directing a significant portion of the Economic Recovery Act toward energy efficiency initiatives such as DOE's Weatherization Assistance Program, federal energy service contracts, state-authorized utility and third-party administered programs, retrofitting existing buildings, and 'Green Jobs' training and public awareness.

The Coalition is asking Senators to communicate with Senate leadership (Reid and Bingaman) to request that the attached amendment be included in the Manager's Amendment. Please communicate with your Senators!  Action Today is critical as this Amendment will be crafted over the weekend!! More detailed information is below and on the web site National SAVE Energy Coalition website, www.nationalsaveenergycoalition.org.

Since the Senate Appropriations Committee released a bill with both lower amounts for the State Energy Programs (SEP) and the Weatherization Assistance Program (WAP), the Coalition is moving to make sure that this existing infrastructure is funded at the level that the House has recommended and with the language which ensures prioritized the expansion of existing programs. The next effort is seeking a "Manager's Amendment" (sponsored by Senate leadership) when the entire Senate votes on the bill next week. In this attempt, the Coalition is working with other energy efficiency coalitions that agree that we must ramp up funding using our existing program infrastructure.
