E-M:/ Lansing Airport Incinerator Update & Details of upcoming hearings

Greetings,

Last week the Clinton County Site Review Committee gave approval for the installation of a new trash incinerator at the Lansing airport. The incinerator will be used to dispose of regulated waste collected from customs ports and from international flights, including confiscated plant and animal materials, in-flight food left-overs, serving containers and anything else that gets thrown in to the “regulated” waste bag.

Two votes were cast against the incinerator, 5 in favor. Those voting against were Gloria Miller and Ken Pung. Voting for the incinerator were: Chris Klawuhn, Jack Enderle, Rich Trent, Jim Foulds, Tonia Olson (representing Granger). Numerous organizations and citizens were in attendance at numerous meetings to speak against the incinerator. No-one but the Airport authority spoke in favor.

There are two more hearings before the Airport receives approval for this new source of pollution and greenhouse gas emissions. This incinerator is a ridiculous and un-necessary addition of particulates, toxic emissions and greenhouse gas emissions. There are other options available to the airport, but they are determined to make trash incineration a profit center for the airport. Please make your voice heard on this issue – make comments or attend upcoming meetings. Details below.

Requests have gone in to County board members asking that the Commissioners meet in the evening, rather than during the day, so that the public can have a say in this decision. At this point, on-one knows the outcome of that request.

Background materials on this issue can be requested from Cara Clore, Clinton County Dept. of Waste Management at Clorec@clinton-county.org or (989) 224-5187.
