Stewardship Intern Position Available – Deadline for Application March 22, 2009

 

Reports To:  Land Protection/Operations Manager.  Works closely with Executive Director and Development Director.

 

Hours of Work:  15 hours/week during April and September; 30 hours/week from May – August.  Some evenings and weekends required.  Flexible scheduling is offered.  Potential to go to full time.

 

Education:  Graduate degree preferred.

 

Preferred Experience:  Appropriate course work in biology, ecology, natural resources and/or related fields

 

Compensation:  $15.00/hour.

 

Responsibilities:  Responsible for conducting stewardship activities for 38 year old land trust.  This includes insuring 100% monitoring of easements and preserves, as well as organizing ongoing stewardship work in four fee-simple preserves, and coordination of volunteer work days.  Other hands-on stewardship may be assigned as time permits.

 

Duties: 

  • Coordinate monitoring on over 30 conservation easements.  This may be done collaboratively with volunteers or other Land Trust staff; ensure 100% completion of same by 9/30/09.
  • Monitor five fee-simple preserves owned by the Land Trust.
  • Review existing management plans for four preserves, developing five year implementation plans for each, including the identification of required resources.
  • Coordinate at least three volunteer work days in preserves.  This work may be coordinated with the Stewardship Network.
  • Initiate work on a management plan for a newly acquired preserve
  • Other hands-on stewardship work as may be assigned from time-to-time.

 

Job Skills:

  • Strong oral communications skills
  • Ability to organize, implement and manage a variety of projects
  • Ability to work well in small team/office environment
  • Knowledge of Microsoft Office suite. 
  • Ability to work with volunteers and coordinate the work of volunteers
  • Working knowledge of Michigan natural habitats
