Re: E-M:/ Biotechnology Seed Companies Thwarting Research

I think this part (in quotes below) would not stand up in court; the
biotech companies would lose. This whole field is moving rapidly outside
of Europe, even in the US, but especially in Asia (see below).
I think it will help for everyone to understand what are and are not the
real issues. This is a very lengthy matter, so I want to dodge it by
citing references below.
"So while university scientists can freely buy pesticides or conventional
seeds for their research, they cannot do that with genetically engineered
seeds. Instead, they must seek permission from the seed companies. And
sometimes that permission is denied or the company insists on reviewing any
findings before they can be published, they say."
The Chinese have massively embraced plant biotech, because they have
discovered that they can reduce (or even eliminate) pesticide use and save
not only money but even the lives of agricultural workers. Science ran an
article about this last November (Stone R (2008) Plant science - China
plans $3.5 billion GM crops initiative. Science 321:1279-1279).
Tester M (2008) AGRICULTURE - Organic and GM- Why not? Science
322:1190-1191.
