Enviro-Mich message from Christopher Graham
-------------------------------------------------------------------------
Hi, Enviro-Mich readers --
I forward this event notice to you in case some of you can attend the
introduction of the State Parks funding bill at the Capitol, next
Thursday.
As many of you know, our State Parks are in very much trouble, for lack
of funding.
Not long ago these programs received 75% of their funding from the
State's General Fund. For the last half a decade or more, that
support has been exactly $0. All reserve funds have been
spent. All long term capital funds are diverted to
operations. Down-sizing and restructuring has already
occurred. We simply will be closing many State Parks soon, if
something does not change.
The State Parks advisory committee has worked steadily for several years
to find a way to provide adequate funding for Michigan's State Parks,
Recreation Areas, State Forest campgrounds. The proposals being
incorporated into the bill are fully indicated in the document at this
link:
http://www.michigan.gov/documents/dnr/12-2008-01_MI_State_Park_Vehicle_Plate_Proposal_Resolution_260648_7.pdf
One other state has taken this approach, with success:
Montana.
Your show of strong support would be most helpful and appreciated!
The lights do look green for this bill, so far.
Chris.

Folks – Your presence is critical at the roll out of the legislation
designed to implement the CCMSP’s proposal to provide long-term stable
fund for the Michigan State Park system, the Michigan forest recreation
system and to double the amount of development grant dollars annually
available to local units of government for parks and recreation!
Please let me know before next Monday (3/9) at 2PM whether you will
be able to be in Rooms 402-3 of the State Capitol for the roll out to
show your support and encourage our legislative sponsors including Sen.
Patty Birkholz. This will be a major press event with
considerable media and the opportunity to tell the positive story of MI
State Parks and clearly express the benefits of eliminating state park
and state boating access MVPs for Michigan registered vehicles and while
providing a convenient way to support state parks, state forest
recreation and local park development and renovation. We have
waited for this opportunity to move forward to make a lasting difference
for state parks. I look forward to hearing from all of you and seeing as
many of you as possible next Thursday.
