Subject: Re: E-M:/ NOW - Southern
Michigan Field Moisture Conditions
Greetings-
Feel free to send some of your extra moisture to the western
U.P.! We've had plenty of lake-effect, but system snows have
almost all been missing us this winter. And, of course, we typically get
little rain here in the winter. We still have plenty of snow (2 - 4
feet, generally) on the ground, but with minimal thawing all winter, we have
lost much less than normal to aquifers.
Which brings up a question. Does anyone know of a web site
that reports water table levels in wells on a scheduled basis?
Thanks.

Flood warning (below) from WUNDERGROUND for southern

Warming and precipitation together with not
completely unfrozen soils in some locations has created saturated soil
conditions in Southern Lower Michigan likely to cause field soil and
waste pollution effluents.
water activist groups should
consider tracking local wastewater effluent discharges this weekend
from:
1. stormwater from CAFO fields with previous land
application and no incorporation....also....this is the type of
condition in which an operator (who has not been diligent about prior
landspreading operations) may find themselves with an overflowing liquid
waste storage facility, or inundated field BMP
conditions.
2. local construction site stormwater
effluents and presence of current BMP implementation to control
present stormwater event.......is your local building and construction
site pouring sediment-laden, turbid water down local street storm drains
and into local watercourses?
3. agricultural field soil erosion
and turbid runoff conditions, the presence of best management practices,
if any, to control bare soil erosive processes.
[Hey...maybe farmers receiving federal subsidies should install and
maintain BMPs as a condition for receiving such subsidies] How is
your local ag operator and neighbor doing in this
department?
4. local combined sewer overflows, including
operation of CSOs and any uncontrolled effluents and
bypasses.
5. urban stormwater runoff effects from
persistent rains under stagnating precipitation producing frontal
condition.
6. turbid and degraded conditions in major
rivers, Saginaw Bay, Lake St. Clair (Canadian side) and Western Lake
Erie.
