E-M:/ RE: / Today's Turbidity Pollution Satellite Shot

The satellite imagery that Alex posted is a vivid representation of what is
most probably clay and silt sized soil particles washed from plowed fields
in the region of Chatham and Wallaceburg, Ontario as well as from fields
draining into the Maumee in Ohio. Similar plumes are visible in the lower
part of Saginaw Bay -- but the extent is partially obscured by ice.
What we should all consider is that it is not just the soil particles that
are eroded or washed from the bare ground -- it is also free nutrients,
either left over from the last growing season or the "fertilizer" (think
manure in some areas) spread on the fields "at agronomic rates" during the
winter months.

Imagery from the NASA Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS)
device aboard the NASA TERRA satellite taken earlier today, Sunday, March
15, 2009.
Extensively and readily apparent turbidity pollution of Southwestern Lake
St. Clair by the Thames and Syndenham Rivers in the Southern
Ontario Peninsula...... The apparent turbidity plume also flows into the
Detroit River and reaches Lake Erie.
Also showing is extensive and readily apparent turbidity pollution
of Western Lake Erie by the Maumee River and of Sandusky Bay.

If it were warmer, appearance of algae and phytoplankton would also be
visible in the turbidity impact areas.
The more visible turbid half of the Detroit River is shown in this
webcam view:
