Job Opening for Chemist (Organic) at USEPA - GLNPO

USEPA's Great Lakes National Program Office (GLNPO) is
seeking to fill a position for an organic chemist to be located
in Chicago, Illinois.  The closing date is 1/17/97.

Duties: The incumbent serves as a scientist on GLNPO's
Environmental Information Branch staff.  GLNPO is
responsible for ensuring the fulfillment of United States
obligations under the Great Lakes Water Quality Agreement
with Canada.  The office is responsible for developing policies
and overseeing programs relating to Great Lakes ecosystem
management.  Analyzes and interprets data regarding the
type, degree and effects of contamination by toxic
substances in the sediments, water and biota of the Great
Lakes, including remediation and management options for
correcting such contamination.  Publishes analytical
scientific results, and writes technical and administrative
reports interpreting conclusions as to the nature of
environmental impacts and regulatory violations.  Serves as a
scientific team leader or lead organic chemist on research
vessels or field teams engaged in monitoring the Great Lakes
ecosystem.  Plans and conducts surveys to identify the
types and degree of toxic organic contamination in the
sediment, water and biota of the Great Lakes.  Develops
collection and analytical methods for organic toxics in
various environmental media.  Prepares and reviews Standard
Operating Procedures and Quality Assurance Project Plans
for collection and analysis of samples for organic chemicals. 
Oversees contract staff in the maintenance and operation of
shipboard organics laboratory.  Serves as Project Officer on
research grants or contracts investigating the presence and
effects of toxic contamination.

SERIES, GRADE, PAY: GS-1320-12 (No known Promotion
Potential); $46,377 per annum
