Demands for science-based decisionmaking in the binational Great Lakes 
Basin are increasing, while research funding and related resources are 
being reduced or otherwise constrained. How can we better 
communicate/share resources to maximize capability? Is there unnecessary 
duplication to eliminate and/or unmet needs to address? Is some form of 
new institutional arrangement needed to improve the operational 
efficiency of the Great Lakes research fleet? These are all pressing 
questions that will be addressed at the Great Lakes Research Vessel 
Coordination workshop, where we look at the near- and long-term future of 
vessel-based Great Lakes research.

This event will be of interest to agency/institute directors, managers 
and vessel operators, and associated scientific staff that rely upon 
Great Lakes research vessel capability to accomplish objectives. Through 
plenary sessions and facilitated breakout groups, attendees will craft a 
strategic plan that will promote--through enhanced communication and 
cooperation--the more efficient and cost-effective use of Great Lakes 
research vessel resources. Attendees also will benefit from an associated 
product: a comprehensive, descriptive inventory of all Great Lakes 
research vessels, including specifications, instrumentation, sailing 
schedule, contact person and other information. Both hard copy and 
Internet-based online versions of this information will be produced.
