1997 SUMMER INTERNSHIP AVAILABLE

The Great Lakes Protection Fund is a non-profit corporation based in Chicago, Illinois.  It is a permanent endowment created by seven Great Lakes states to support efforts that help create a healthy and sustainable Great Lakes ecosystem.  The Fund supports projects which foster collaboration between government, industry, academia, and environmental sectors.  Current areas of interest for funding include pollution prevention, natural resources, and health effects.  Since its inception in 1989, the Fund has awarded 131 grants committing over $18 million.

The Fund is seeking to hire an intern for 10-12 weeks during the summer of 1997.  Starting and ending dates are flexible.  The position is paid, but no benefits are included.

A small organization, the Fund provides the intern with an opportunity to work with the entire staff and experience a variety of types of tasks.  To function smoothly, the Fund depends upon the dedication of staff, commitment to task completion, team work, and plenty of good humor.  Staff is committed to providing the intern with a positive opportunity to learn more about grant making and the Great Lakes. 

Position Description:

The intern provides support to the Fund's grant making program.  Specific duties include:

.	Assist in the evaluation of results of completed grants;
.	Assist in the review of interim reports from ongoing projects;
.	Evaluate and update the Fund's resource files and library materials; 
.	Assist in the review of initial requests for grant assistance; and,
.	General administrative help, as needed.

Qualifications:

.	Strong analytical skills;
.	Computer experience, including word processing and databases, required;
.	Ability to work both independently and as a member of a team;
.	Strong communication skills, both verbal and written; and,
.	Knowledge of Great Lakes environmental issues helpful.
