    FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

TUG SINKS AT ST MARYS RAPIDS COMPENSATING WORKS

Around 6:00 am Tuesday August 5, 1997 the Ryba Marine Construction
company's tugboat "Venture"sank in front of gate #4 on the Canadian
side of control structure at the head of the St Marys Rapids in Sault
Ste. Marie. The tugboat is lodged on its side with its bow partially
under gate #4. All of the crew members successfully abandoned ship.
The captain was taken to hospital with an apparent jaw injury. No
other injuries were reported. The "Venture" had been working
upstream of the structure to position itself to move the work barge
being used to repair gates #11 and #12 on U.S. side of the control
structure. Equipment is being brought onto the site to remove the tug
    as soon as possible.

Gates #1 through #5 were open prior to the sinking. Gate # 3 was
closed immediately after the accident. To ensure that the August Plan
1977-A outflow of 2,680 cubic metres per second is maintained, other
    gates were opened today.

Further news releases on this situation will be issued as developments
    occur.
