Christmas gifts “otter” be special
Add otter sponsorships to your shopping list

Make your holiday “otterly” fantastic by helping to bring North American
river otters back to Indiana waters. The Department of Natural Resources’
Division of Fish and Wildlife is offering otter sponsorships to individuals,
families, schools, organizations and businesses.
Sponsorships range from $25 to $500 and go directly to the river otter
reintroduction project. Each sponsor receives an official river otter sponsor
certificate. Additional awards are available based on the amount of the
donation. Awards include:
$75 - $149 Pewter river otter pin
$150 - $349	Otter project hat and pin
$350 - $499	Signed and numbered limited edition river otter art print
$500 and up	Framed otter photograph with engraved appreciation plate

The river otter is an endangered species that disappeared from Indiana around
1942. The main factors contributing to its decline were unregulated taking,
loss of wetlands and decreasing water quality.
The Indiana river otter reintroduction project began in January 1995 with the
release of 25 otters into the Muscatatuck National Wildlife Refuge in Seymour,
Ind. To date, the DNR has released 174 river otters and plans to release 76
otters in 1998. Biologists believe that a minimum of 325 otters are needed
statewide to establish a healthy population. Sponsorship of an otter helps
guarantee that more otters can call Indiana home.
To participate or for more information, contact: Otter Sponsorship Program,
Division of Fish and Wildlife, 402 W. Washington Street, Room W273,
Indianapolis, IN 46204, or call 317/232-4080. Sponsorship checks should be
made payable to the otter sponsorship program.
