Deadline for Environmental Journalism Institute is March 16, 1998




	DEADLINE FOR GREAT LAKES ENVIRONMENTAL JOURNALISM TRAINING INSTITUTE
				IS MARCH 16, 1998

	This is a reminder that the deadline for submitting applications to
attend the Great Lakes Environmental Journalism Training Institute at
Michigan State University is Monday, March 16, 1998. All application forms
must be postmarked by that date to be eligible for consideration.
	The training institute will be held from June 2 to 6, 1998 at the
Kellogg Center and Journalism School at Michigan State University in East
Lansing, Michigan. The only cost is a $75 registration fee. Lodging, meal
expenses, training materials, books, tuition and other miscellaneous
expenses will be paid by grants from the George Gund, Knight and Dart
Foundations.
	Journalists from the Great Lakes states (Illinois, Indiana,
Michigan, Minnesota, New York, Ohio, Pennsylvania, Wisconsin) and Ontario,
Canada are eligible to apply to the institute. A special effort will be
made to train promising journalists with little background in environmental
journalism but those at all levels of experience are invited to apply.
	Journalists selected will participate in a variety of seminars on
environmental issues and environmental journalism taught by
nationally-known environmental journalists and environmental experts.
Included in the institute will be training in computer-assisted reporting;
tours of environmental research  facilities on Lake Michigan and elsewhere;
a visit to a Lansing Lugnuts minor league baseball game; and other
activities.
	Alumni of this program have given this course very favorable
reviews. "I went away with so many story ideas, new sources and valuable
resources for environmental reporting," said Melissa Ramsdell of The Daily
Herald in Arlington Heights, Ill. "Spending time with such a talented group
of reporters was inspiring and energizing."
