Ohio Lake Erie Commission Will Address
Grant Funding Issues at March 18 Meeting

TOLEDO, OH - The Ohio Lake Erie Commission will hold its regular quarterly meeting on Wednesday, March 18, 1998 in Columbus beginning at 10:00 a.m. The meeting will be held at Ohio EPA - Hazardous Waste Facility Board Hearing Room, 1700 WaterMark Drive, 1st Floor in Columbus.
The Ohio Lake Erie Commission will review and act upon the Grants Committee's recommendation for the 1998 Lake Erie Protection Fund Large Grant Cycle funding priorities. Commission members will also review five small grant proposals totaling $33,675 and select recipients for this funding cycle. Grants are awarded through the Lake Erie Protection Fund, which is supported through payments from the Great Lakes Protection Fund, Lake Erie License Plate Program, Erie?Our Great Lake credit card program, donations, and bequests.
This meeting will also include a public comment period concerning the funding priorities for the Lake Erie Protection Fund. In addition, the following issues will be addressed during agency reports: a new initiative of the Natural Resources Conservation Service; the Governor's new Ohio Port Authorities Council; the Great Lakes Dredging Team draft report; and the debate on current phosphorus levels in Lake Erie.
Commission members will also hear Advisor Reports from the following organizations: the Natural Resources Conservation Service, the Northeast Ohio Areawide Coordinating Agency, Ohio Sea Grant, the Ohio Coastal Resource Management Project, and the Toledo Metropolitan Area Council of Governments. All meetings of the Ohio Lake Erie Commission are open to the public. Concerned organizations and citizens are urged to attend this meeting and provide input on agenda items or other issues of concern.
The Ohio Lake Erie Commission is comprised of the directors of the Ohio Environmental Protection Agency, and the Departments of Natural Resources, Transportation, Development, Health, and Agriculture. The Ohio Lake Erie Commission was established for the purpose of preserving Lake Erie's natural resources, protecting the quality of waters and ecosystem, and promoting economic development of the region.
Responsible for the administration of the Lake Erie Protection Fund, the Commission has awarded grant monies for Lake Erie related research and implementation programs since 1992. Other programs that the Ohio Lake Erie Commission and their staff, the Ohio Lake Erie Office, are responsible for include the Lake Erie License Plate and Ohio's Coastweeks, an annual public outreach program celebrating Lake Erie.
