EPA Sustainable Land Use Conference

The Arrowhead Regional Development Commission in Duluth, Minnesota, is
proud to announce the

EPA SUSTAINABLE LAND USE CONFERENCE
April 27-28, 1998
Barkers Island Inn
Superior, Wisconsin

THE MISSION OF THE CONFERENCE is to communicate the challenges faced by
Lake Superior communities in their efforts to grow economically, yet
recognize the importance of maintaining the cultural and natural
integrity of the area. The Lake Superior Basin continues to face
constant pressure to expand and provide facilities similar to those of
their urban counterparts. Historically, the results of unchecked
development have included urban sprawl, spoiled habitat, and an
inconsistent tax base. To be successful, it is prudent that area
residents work with planners to synthesize the issues and explore the
potential outcomes. This conference presents an excellent opportunity
for the exchange of information and ideas about the future of
sustainable development in the Lake Superior Basin.

We are preparing for an exciting event and interesting speakers
including:

Randall Arendt, Vice President of the Natural Lands Trust and author of
_Rural by Design: Maintaining Small Town Character_;
John Wells of Minnesota Power;
Terry Gips of Natural Step;
Renee Fink Herrington of the Business Retention and Expansion Strategies
Program, U of Minnesota; and
Several presenters of case studies of sustainable development in Lake
Superior Basin communities.
