F.T. Stone Lab Open House

Great Island Tour - F.T. Stone Laboratory on Gibraltar Island Open House

Gibraltar Island, Put-in-Bay, Ohio -- The F.T. Stone Laboratory on
Gibraltar Island in Lake Erie will host a 1-day open house on Saturday,
August 29 from noon to 4 p.m. This will give South Bass Island visitors and
residents the opportunity to visit and tour Gibraltar, the "mystery" island
in the middle of the bay. Come out that day and learn about the many
programs and research projects conducted at the Lab.

Activities will include guided tours and hands-on learning experiences.
Representatives from Ohio Sea Grant will be available to answer questions.
In addition, there will be self-guided bicycle tours of South Bass Island,
and an open house and tour of the South Bass lighthouse, located near the
Lime Kiln ferry dock. A boat will be running back and forth between the OSU
research dock and Gibraltar Island approximately every 30 minutes. Maps for
the bike tour will be available at an information table at the research
dock area. Information about the other activities that day will also be
available.

The Ohio State University's F.T. Stone Laboratory, located on the 6.5-acre
Gibraltar Island in Put-in-Bay harbor, is the Lake Erie research and
teaching laboratory for the Ohio Sea Grant College Program, and is the
oldest freshwater biological field station and research laboratory in the
United States. Since its establishment in 1895, significant research has
been conducted by both student and professional biologists on the ecology
of Lake Erie and the Great Lakes region.
The open house event is also part of Coastweeks '98, a national three-week
celebration of our nation's waters and shorelines. Coastweeks runs from
August 29 through September 21, 1998 and includes a variety of
recreational, educational, and environmental opportunities coordinated by
the Ohio Lake Erie Office.
