About the Mott Foundation:  The Charles Stewart Mott Foundation is an
endowed private foundation providing grant support for programs across
the United States and, on a limited basis, internationally.  The
Foundation supports programs related to civil society, the environment,
poverty, Flint area needs, and other issues of interest to Trustees.  In
1997, the Foundation awarded 461 grants totaling about $72 million.

About the Communications Officer Position:  The Foundation has an
immediate opening for a Communications Officer to serve as a liaison to
the Environment Team.  The Foundation is in the midst of revising its
environmental grantmaking which presents an opportunity to help develop
innovative communications strategies related to its next multi-year
program plan.  Past environmental grantmaking priorities have included
reform of international lending and trade policies; protection of the
Great Lakes Ecosystem and prevention of toxic pollution.  The Mott
Foundation made 92 environmental grants in 1997 totaling $10.8 million.  
The primary focus of this position is to monitor the activities of the
Environment programis team identifying opportunities to advance
organizational goals and grantmaking through communications.  The
individual filling this position should have a conceptual appreciation
of using communications as a grantmaking strategy.  Responsibilities
will include maintaining comprehensive knowledge of the Environment
programis grantmaking objectives, strategies, direction, grants and
lessons learned as well as maintaining awareness of the issues addressed
by the program in terms of national and regional trends with special
emphasis on public policy initiative and media activity.  Advancing
grantmaking through strategic communications requires solid media,
policy, and professional organization contacts and a willingness to
network on team issues in coordination with the team.  At times, these
contacts will include freelance consultants which will be coordinated by
this position.  Working in partnership with the Environment team, this
role will monitor the communication needs of the team and its grantees.

In addition to at least 5 years experience working with issue-based
communications campaigns, candidates for this position should have
strong writing, speaking and strategic communication skills and be able
to apply them to the activities of the Foundation and its grantees. 
They should be familiar with environmental issues, including the
implications of international development, and have exposure to
philanthropy or working with non-profits. This position requires the
abilities to work as a member of a diverse team, manage multiple
priorities and be flexible.  Proficiency in the use of word processing
and Internet-related technology is a must.  The preferred candidate
would speak Spanish or have other foreign language skills and
international experience.  A bacheloris degree is required.
