GLTF FYI - SLSDC Administrator
The Senate Committee on Commerce, Science, and Transportation
has announced a Full Committee hearing on the nominations of Ashish
Sen to be Director of the Bureau of Transportation Statistics at
the Department of Transportation, and Albert Jacquez to be
Administrator of the Saint Lawrence Seaway Development Corporation.
The Full Committee hearing will be on Thursday, October 8, at 9:30
a.m. in room 253 of the Russell Senate Office Building.
The nomination of Albert Jacquez to be Administrator of the SLSDC is
raising controversy in the region on procedural grounds. American Great Lakes
Ports has written to several Senators from the region asking that a hold be
placed on the nomination until January to give regional organizations and
interested parties time to evaluate Mr. Jacquez' qualifications. American
Maritime Officers have endorsed the nomination and the Lake Carriers'
Association is opting to neither endorse nor oppose the nomination. The Union
which represents Seaway workers has not yet come out with a formal position on
the nomination; though Union representatives have expressed concern over the
process of the nomination and over Mr. Jacquez' lack of familiarity with the
Great Lakes region, they also have reiterated the importance of filling the
position expeditiously.
Three Senators currently have holds placed on this nomination.
