Position Title: Lake Erie Fisheries Research Positions

Agency/Location: Department of Fisheries and Wildlife, Michigan State
University, East Lansing, MI & Oak Harbor, OH.

Responsibilities: Two fisheries research assistants are being recruited
to assist with sampling of early life history stages of walleye in
western Lake Erie. Employment will begin March 29, 1999 and continue
through July 1999 with possible extension through fall. Salary
commensurate with experience and qualifications. Housing and
transportation are provided at the Lake Erie field site. The goal of
this research project is to identify and quantify factors influencing
growth and survival of reef-spawned walleye eggs and larvae in western
Lake Erie. Work will be performed from the university-owned 8.3 meter
r/v Osmerid. The research team will reside and work from a cottage
located on the shore of western Lake Erie immediately under the
Davis-Bessie nuclear power facility located north of Route 2 in Oak
Harbor, OH (between Pt. Clinton and Toledo). Due to irregular weather
patterns and the unpredictable biology of the fish, the normal 40-hour
work week will be disregarded and sampling will be performed as weather
and time permit.

Qualifications: The successful applicants will assist with the
collection of walleye eggs from reefs, zooplankton and limnological
sampling, larval fish sampling, gillnetting for egg predators, and
assorted laboratory work to identify and quantify collected samples.
The successful applicants will be: familiar with Great Lakes fishes,
understand fisheries sampling techniques and methods, possess Power
Squadron or USCG boating safety certification and have experience
piloting and maintaining powerboats. Successful applicants will be able
to work unsupervised under less than optimal conditions and be able to
adapt and persevere while enduring adverse weather and life-threatening
circumstances.

Closing Date: March 1, 1999.

Contact: Interested persons should send a letter of application and
resume detailing boat operation and field sampling experience and
include names and contact information of at least two (2) references to:
