Ballast Water Research Symposium

Symposium on Ballast Water Management and Aquatic Nuisance Species:
Setting a Research Agenda for the Great Lakes

8:30 a.m.-5:00 p.m.
Thursday, April 29, 1999
Duluth, Minn.

The forum is sponsored by the Great Lakes Panel on Aquatic Nuisance
Species and is being held in conjunction with the International Zebra
Mussel and Aquatic Nuisance Species Conference.

Policymakers, researchers and industry representatives will gather on
Thursday, April 29, 1999 in Duluth, Minn. to assess current approaches
to ballast water management, identify prospective technologies and
establish associated research priorities. Participants will
collectively assess and identify the technologies and research
approaches with the greatest promise for providing effective and
practicable solutions for preventing new introductions of nonindigenous
aquatic nuisance species via ballast water. The outcome will be a
detailed ballast water research agenda that addresses gaps and unmet
needs and identifies critical research priorities for the Great Lakes
Basin. Ultimately, this research agenda will help guide agencies and
organizations that fund, manage or conduct ballast water research.

The research forum is being held in the same location as the
International Zebra Mussel and Aquatic Nuisance Species Conference. The
conference's ballast water presentations, scheduled for Wednesday, April
28, will provide critical background information for Thursday's research
forum. There is no charge for the Thursday ballast water research forum
