David Suzuki and The OntAIRio Campaign to Address Cross-Border Air
Pollution in
Windsor

On Monday, May 3rd, at 11 AM, The OntAIRio Campaign will host a news
conference
at the Windsor Press Club in Windsor, Ontario. The purpose of the conference
will be to address the issue of transboundary air pollution. A Sierra Club of
Canada report entitled The Challenge to Canada will be released at that time.
This paper establishes that Ontario must reduce emissions from its coal-fired
power plants in order to lever reductions in U.S. generated transboundary air
pollution. 

The Windsor conference panel will consist of Dr. David Suzuki, Dan McDermott,
Director of The OntAIRio Campaign, Rick Coronado, Research Coordinator of the
Windsor based Citizens Environmental Alliance, and Elliot Levinsohn, Air
Quality Manager of the American Lung Association of Michigan, representing 9
Michigan environmental and public health organizations. 

Mr. Levinsohn will present at the conference an open letter from the Michigan
groups to Ontario Premier Mike Harris calling on Harris to mandate pollution
cuts from Ontario’s fleet of coal-fired power plants similar to those that the
Ontario Government is demanding of Michigan based plants. The Harris
Government
is currently intervening in a U.S. court on behalf of the U.S. EPA’s NOx
reduction ruling which applies to 22 states including Michigan. Ontario
currently has no program to match this U.S. initiative.
