Appropriations charts updating progress on Federal appropriations for Great
Lakes programs have been updated and are available at hte NEMW website
(http://www.nemw.org select "Great Lakes" and "Congressional Updates").
Not yet on the website - The Energy and Water Appropriations bill was passed by
the Senate yesterday! Senators Levin and DeWine (with broad, bipartisan support
from colleagues in the region and throughout the country) successfully gained
inclusion of $1.5 million in funding for Army Corps of Engineers' research into
environmentally sound control for zebra mussels and other aquatic nuisance
species affecting public infrastructure. The amendment restores the program
from a committee mark of zero funding to the Clinton Administration request.
Corps officials indicate that funds will be sufficient to continue ongoing zebra
mussel research and to begin similar efforts for the brown mussel, Asiatic clam
and mitten crab.
