          Aquatic Ecologist Becomes Minnesota Sea Grant Director

Christine Maziar, vice president for research and dean of the University of 
Minnesota graduate school, and Kathryn A. Martin, Chancellor of the University 
of Minnesota Duluth, are pleased to announce that Carl Richards, an aquatic 
ecologist, has accepted the position of director for the Minnesota Sea Grant 
College Program.  Concurrently, Richards has been appointed a professor in the 
University of Minnesota DuluthÕs biology department.  

Richards is moving from his position as a senior research associate with the 
University of Minnesota Duluth's Natural Resources Research Institute, where he 
led Sea Grant studies on Eurasian ruffe ecology and identifying potential sites 
for reintroducing coaster brook trout into Lake Superior streams.  RichardsÕ 
other research projects investigate how the landscape influences arctic lakes, 
the ecology of Midwestern streams, and how sediment toxins and contaminants 
affect bottom-dwelling creatures in the St. Louis River.  

As director and professor, Richards will guide the statewide, national, and 
international research, outreach, and communications of Minnesota Sea Grant.  
Richards earned a bachelorÕs degree in biology from the University of Southern 
Mississippi, a masterÕs degree in biology from California State University-Los 
Angeles, and a doctorate in aquatic ecology from Idaho State University. 

Richards is a member of the American Fisheries Society, the North American 
Benthological Society, the American Association for the Advancement of Science, 
and the Society of Environmental Toxicology and Chemistry.
