GLERL Seminar Series presents

Dr. Mace Barron, Hagler Bailly/Strauss Consulting

"Assessing the Toxicity of Spilled Petroleum"

Tuesday, Sept. 7, 1999, 11-12:00 a.m., Main Conference Room.

This seminar will summarize research evaluating the toxicity of oil
chronically discharging to coastal wetlands, estuarine, and intertidal
areas near the Nipomo dunes, California. The toxicity assessment
included testing the toxicity to endemic species (sand crabs) and the
photoenhanced toxicity to crustaceans, fish, and amphibians. Light
intensity and spectra were quantified in aquatic habitats using a
scanning spectroradiometer and then reproduced in the laboratory using
a USGS solar simulator. Analytical chemistry measurements by GC/MS
included C10 to C30 alkanes, 41 PAHs and alkyl homologs, and 53
heterocyclic aromatics. Injury thresholds were developed and compared
to petroleum concentrations in aquatic habitats to assess risks to site
biota. GIS mapping was used to overlay occurrences of special status
species with areas exceeding injury thresholds.

Effects on Fish: Development and Pilot Implementation of the
Biomonitoring of Environmental Status and Trends Program in U.S.
Rivers"

Wednesday, Sept. 8, 1999, 11-12:00 a.m., Main Conference Room
