New Report Shows Environmental Crime Pays in Three Great Lake States
"Big Factories Break Water Pollution Law, Foul Rivers, Get Off the Hook"
A report released on January 31, 2000, by the Environmental Working
Group (EWG) shows that environmental crime pays as several large
factories in Pennsylvania, Michigan and Ohio have routinely violated
their NPDES permits for years and have not been penalized. EWG performed
a three-month computer investigation of Clean Water Act EPA enforcement
reports from April 1997 to March 1999 based on EPA's Sectors Facility
Indexing Project which tracks major violations of key pollution laws and
fines assessed for violations. To investigate violations in your state,
go to EPA's Office of Enforcement and Compliance Assurance at:
http://es.epa.gov/oeca/index.htm. For a copy of this report, visit
www.ewg.org or call Mike Casey at 202-667-6982.
