Mr. Francis X. Lyons will be the Featured Newsmaker at the next Breakfast
with Mort. Mr. Lyons is the U.S. EPA Regional Administrator in Region 5, a
position he was appointed to in April 1999. The Region 5 Administrator
manages U.S. EPA regional programs in Illinois, Indiana, Ohio, Minnesota,
Wisconsin, and Michigan, including the Great Lakes National program and
cooperative efforts with state, city, and county governments, industry, and
public and private organizations. This will be the first appearance of Mr.
Lyons at a professional association in Michigan. Mr. Lyons is an attorney
with over 10 years of experience in federal and state government,
principally on environmental matters. He has been an attorney in the
Department of Justice, Environmental Enforcement Section since October 1994.
He served as lead counsel on numerous complex Air and Superfund cases and as
a member of litigation teams dealing with other environmental disputes.
The Breakfast With Mort will be held on Thursday, February 24, 2000 at the
Dearborn Inn, located at 20301 Oakwood Boulevard, between Michigan Avenue
and Rotunda Drive, just north of Interstate 94. A complete breakfast will
be served beginning at 7:30 a.m. in the Early American Room. The program
begins with a panel interview of Mr. Lyons at 8:30 a.m. in the Alexandria
Ballroom and will conclude at approximately 10:00 a.m.
The East Michigan Chapter of the Air & Waste Management Association sponsors
the Breakfast With Mort series. Breakfast With Mort was developed to provide
environmental professionals an innovative and inexpensive forum for
discussing and debating breaking environmental issues and policy including
air and water pollution, soil and groundwater remediation, solid and
hazardous wastes, brownfield redevelopment, etc. The program generally
follows the pattern of the original This Week with David Brinkley television
show on ABC Sunday mornings.
Regular panel members first interview the Featured Newsmaker and, during
this time, questions from the audience are encouraged. After questioning
the Featured Newsmaker, the panel members open a spirited questioning of
each other on any environmental matter that may arise. Since the program is
not scripted beforehand, the questions and responses are fascinating and can
take a surprising turn. The program is lively, informal, unrehearsed, and
fast paced. Previous Featured Newsmakers included: United States
Congressman Mr. John Dingell; Mr. Russell Harding, Director of the Michigan
Department of Environmental Quality; Michigan State Senator Mr. Kenneth
Sikkema,  Dr. George Wolff,Senior Scientist, General Motors Corporation;
Ms. Lana Pollack, Director of the Michigan Environmental Council; and Mr.
David Kee, Chief of the Air & Radiation Division, USEPA, Region V (since
retired). The moderator is Mr. Mort Sterling (for whom the program is
named), Principal with the Sterling Consulting Group (a Horizon
Environmental Corporation company), and past Director of both Environmental
Protection for the Detroit Edison Company and the Wayne County Air Quality
Management Division. The panel consists of: Dr. William Cooper, Professor
of Zoology, Michigan State University; Ms. Karen Kendrick-Hands,
Environmental Attorney; and Mr. Tim O’Brien, Director, Environmental Quality
Office for the Ford Motor
Company.
