GLIN==> water volume

    I've heard that the Great Lakes contain enough water to submerge an area 
the size of the continental U.S. in three feet of water.  I've also heard 
that it is eight feet of water.
     Can anyone resolve this, comment on the validity of either comparison or 
suggest a different one?
