TRANSPORTATION RESEARCH ASSISTANT

      The Northeast-Midwest Institute is looking for a research
assistant to join its team examining trade and transportation issues
in the Upper Midwest. The candidate will work with transportation and
rural development analysts to research and evaluate freight and
passenger transportation trends. He/she also will suggest policies to
improve the region's mobility and transportation system efficiency.
The project's objective is to ensure that the Upper Midwest's
infrastructure is capable of serving future international trade and
transportation needs.

      Applicants should have experience with freight and passenger
transportation issues and/or business logistics trends, and they
should understand how such issues and trends relate to economic
development strategies. Quality writing and speaking skills are
essential, and applicants should have the ability to work well with
diverse interest groups. Creativity and strategic thinking skills will
be valued.  The position's annual salary will be $30-32,000, depending
upon experience.


RURAL DEVELOPMENT ANALYST

      The Northeast-Midwest Institute also is looking for a policy
analyst to help focus on trade and transportation trends in the Upper
Midwest.  Working with a transportation expert and research assistant,
the analyst will pay particular attention to agriculture,
manufacturing trade, and rural development.  This three-year project
will forecast regional, national, and international trends in
commodity agriculture, food production and consumption, and
manufacturing that may hinder or offer economic opportunities for the
region. This information will be correlated with trends in the
transportation sector in order to make recommendations regarding the
region's infrastructure investments and trade and transportation
policy.

      Applicants should have several years of experience with
agriculture and trade issues, as well as a detailed understanding of
economic development strategies.  Quality writing and speaking skills
are essential, and the policy analyst should have the ability to work
well with diverse interest groups.  The position's annual salary will
be $45,000.


ENVIRONMENTAL POLICY ANALYST:  BIOLOGICAL INVASIONS

      The Northeast-Midwest Institute is looking for a policy analyst
to help the Institute continue its active work on preventing
environmental and economic damage of the Great Lakes and other U.S.
waters from invasive species.  The individual, working with a senior
policy analyst, will organize a multi-sector conference and trade show
on emerging ballast water treatment methods.  The individual also will
conduct policy research in anticipation of the next authorization of
the National Invasive Species Act, and help with scientific and
economic research on technologies and practices to prevent the further
ballast-mediated invasions.

      Applicants should have a scientific background and experience
working on invasive species and other environmental policy issues.
Also needed are demonstrated organizational, research, and writing
skills.  An understanding of Capitol Hill procedures also would be
useful.  The position's annual salary will be approximately $40,000.


ENVIRONMENTAL RESEARCH ASSISTANT:  GREAT LAKES

      The Northeast-Midwest Institute is looking for a research
assistant to focus on sustainable development issues associated with
the Great Lakes ecosystem.  The individual will focus on several
projects, including the organization of a conference and trade show on
prevention of invasive species invasions, as well as a study on the
economic benefits of cleaning up contaminated sediments.  The
individual also will provide administrative support  i.e., list
maintenance, meeting logistics  for the senior policy analyst.

      Applicants should have knowledge of environmental issues, as well
as demonstrated organizational and writing skills.  Also needed is the
ability to work well with diverse interest groups.  The position's
annual salary will be $30-32,000, depending upon experience.
