POSITION DESCRIPTION
Extension Watershed Agent - Saginaw Bay East Central Region
Funding for this appointment is secure for three years. The successful
candidate will work to develop ongoing support based on local needs. The
hours are flexible, with night and weekend meetings.
QUALIFICATIONS:
§ Attainment of
at least a Bachelor's degree (Master's preferred) in an area directly
related to fulfilling the responsibilities of the position. Background in
land use, water quality, natural resources, urban planning, sociology or
related field. Working knowledge and experience in land use and water
quality issues.
§ Successful
experiences in resource development, fund procurement and managing
operating budgets desirable.
§ Demonstrated
effective leadership ability, effective human relations and communication
skills - both written and oral. Proven track record of working with
community based groups to establish program/project direction. Experience
in establishing collaborations and community based initiatives.
§ Computer
skills, including use of word processing, spread sheets, GIS systems,
presentation software and the development of multimedia programs.
§ Documented
understanding of and commitment to equal opportunity, affirmative action
and diversity/pluralism. Demonstrated ability to work effectively with
diverse audiences of all socioeconomic levels and cultural backgrounds.
POSITION RESPONSIBILITIES:
This position will be responsible for program enhancing the environmental
stewardship of the Saginaw Bay Watershed with emphasis on programming
with land owners, agricultural producers, industry and others impacting
the Saginaw River and its tributaries.
Saginaw Bay is an area that is receiving greater developmental pressures
while at the same time trying to recover from major environmental
insults. Water Quality concerns from non-point sources and contaminated
sediment continue to affect the beneficial uses of the bay. Wetlands in
the bay area are being drained and lost while exotics such as purple
loosestrife are reducing biodiversity. The bay's sportfishery is
expanding and demands from the public for access are going unmet. Bay
City has recognized the value of its waterfront and is trying to reclaim
it from its industrial past.
Position functions include:
§ Works with the
Michigan Sea Grant and other Extension team members in utilizing
short-term and long-range project planning to develop educational
initiatives that reflect local needs and priorities.
§ Develop,
research, demonstrate and test practical solutions (derived from
university research) to user problems through cooperative efforts with
individuals and organizations involved in water quality, land use, and
wetland issues.
§ Conducts,
facilitates and/or supports educational programs in the area of land use,
brown field redevelopment, water quality, wetlands, and wise use of the
land and natural resource base. Programming should reflect the priorities
emerging from a community-based approach. Programming should target the
diversity of audiences within the entire Saginaw Bay Watershed.
§ Builds and
maintains a network of contacts with other groups interested in community
development and land use / natural resource related issues. Utilization
of local resources to supplement Michigan Sea Grant/MSU Extension
resources is encouraged. Collaborates with community based organizations
to extend and expand programming support.
§ Works with
community residents and leaders in identifying problem areas and
opportunities for educational impact. Provides effective leadership in
utilizing the skills and abilities of community volunteers and
stakeholders.
§ Works with
Michigan Sea Grant and MSUE administrative team members to assure
compliance with equal opportunity, affirmative action and other civil
rights requirements. Shares responsibility for meeting MSU Extension
commitments to diversity/pluralism.
§ Develops
proposals that enhance the Michigan Sea Grant mission and programs.
Engages project partners in designing resource development strategies to
support procurement of private and public funds to support programmatic
efforts.
§ Participates
in professional development activities to maintain effectiveness in land
use, water quality, community development and leadership to maintain a
disciplinary competence in the educational role.
§ Carries other
duties as assigned.
ADMINISTRATIVE RELATIONSHIPS:
Reports to the Regional Extension Director. Participates as a member of
the Bay County Extension team.
