GLIN==> Change of command at USACE-Detroit District



LTC Richard J. Polo, Jr. assumed command of the Detroit District, U.S. Army
Corps of Engineers on July 7, 2000.  Polo replaces Lt. Col. Robert J. Davis
who has been assigned to attend the Industrial College, Armed Forces at Fort
McNair in Washington, D.C.

Prior to coming to Detroit, LTC Polo served three years in Washington D.C.
as Chief of the Commander's Planning Group and Special Assistant to the
Chief of Engineers.

LTC Polo was born in Ft. Hood, Texas. He was graduated from the United
States Military Academy in 1980 with a Bachelor of Science degree and was
commissioned
into the Corps of Engineers. He later earned a Master's Degree in civil
engineering from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT). His
professional military
education includes the Engineer Officer Basic and Advanced Courses and the
Command and General Staff College.

LTC Polo has served three troop tours in the 1st and 2nd Armored Divisions,
located in Texas and Germany. He has been a platoon leader, battalion
adjutant, brigade
engineer, company commander, and battalion executive officer in 16th, 17th,
and 40th Combat Engineer Battalions. When the Army deployed the 1st Armored
Division
(1AD) as part of Operation JOINT ENDEAVOR, LTC Polo deployed to Croatia and
then Bosnia as the Engineer Brigade operations officer for Task Force Eagle
and 1AD /
Multinational Division (North).

LTC Polo has had staff assignments as a project engineer in the Kuwait
Emergency Recovery Office (KERO) during Operation DESERT STORM; as the
operations officer
in the Directorate of Engineering and Housing in Bad Kreuznach, Germany; and
as an Assistant Professor and the Dept. Executive Officer in the Department
of
Mathematical Sciences at West Point, New York.

LTC Polo's military awards and decorations include the Meritorious Service
Medal (four awards), the Army Commendation Medal (four awards), the Armed
Forces
Expeditionary Medal, and the NATO and Humanitarian Service Medals. He has
been awarded the Parachutist Badge and the Ranger Tab.

LTC Polo is a native of Coral Gables, Florida and is married to the former
Gabriele Blasek of Weinsheim, Germany. They have two daughters, Michelle and
Danielle.
