GLIN==> Basinwide Great Lakes reference coverages

Mapping and GIS work taking place at the Great Lakes Commission is
resulting in the consolidation and editing of a number of data sets to
create basin-wide reference layers. As these layers are completed,
they will be made available for download as .zipped filesets for ArcView

or Arc/INFO through the Maps & GIS section of GLIN. Go to
http://www.great-lakes.net/gis/data/ and click on "Basinwide Reference
Data" in the sidebar.

The first of these data sets is a consolidation of the political
boundaries for the U.S. states and Canadian provinces within the
Great Lakes basin. This layer is intended for use both in data depiction

and as a common edge for clipping the other data sets which will make
up this reference set.

The other layer which is being made available at this time groups U.S.
and Canadian watershed boundary files into a regional coverage that
depicts the entire Great Lakes basin. The files were clipped to the
state and provincial boundaries listed above and minor screen edits were

made to close gaps along lake edges and national borders. One version
retains all watershed data acquired from the source files, the other
groups the watersheds into larger lake basin polygons for use in
overviews.

As refinements are made to these layers, they will be posted. Anyone
with information about more detailed data sets that could enhance
these resources is welcomed to contact Stuart Eddy (seddy@glc.org).
