SITE OF THE MONTH FOR OCTOBER
Chippewa Ottawa Treaty Fishery Management Authority:
http://www.cotfma.org/
Michigan's Grand Traverse Band of Ottawa and Chippewa Indians, Sault
Ste. Marie Tribe of Chippewa Indians, and Bay Mills Indian Community,
parties to the 1836 Treaty to fish in Great Lakes waters, formed the
COTFMA in 1981 to regulate the treaty fishery. The Little River Band at
Manistee joined them in 1998. COTFMA is a source of information about
the tribal fishery past and present, treaty and environmental issues,
user agreements and related court cases, and current events. Discussions
on contaminants, the benefits of eating fish, a Tribal Fishing
newsletter, and an 1836 Treaty Fishery Guide are also offered. In August
2000, the five tribes and the state of Michigan signed a new 20-year
fishing agreement.
