Thunder Bay National Marine Sanctuary and Underwater Preserve to be
Designated

The Thunder Bay National Marine Sanctuary and Underwater Preserve, the
nation's first Great Lakes sanctuary and the first sanctuary in 25 years
based solely on underwater cultural resources, will be officially designated
on October 7 in Alpena, Michigan. Governor John Engler and U.S. Commerce
Secretary Norman Mineta will conduct the ceremony, which will celebrate a
new state/federal partnership to protect and interpret the more than 100
shipwrecks in Thunder Bay. This sanctuary is the thirteenth in the National
Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration's network of national marine
sanctuaries.

More than a century of Great Lakes maritime heritage lies below the waters
of Lake Huron in Thunder Bay. Many of these nationally significant
shipwrecks have been preserved by the lake's cold, fresh water, and are in
an exceptional state of preservation.

WHAT: Michigan Governor John Engler and U.S. Commerce Secretary Norman
Mineta will host the designation ceremony.

WHEN: Saturday, October 7th at 11:30 A.M.

WHERE: The event will take place at Bay View Park on Alpena's Lake Huron
waterfront (US 23 at Prentiss Street adjacent to Alpena's Small Boat
Harbor).

WHO: The public is invited to attend.
