WORKSHOP ANNOUNCEMENT

Empowering Community Leaders to Address Contaminated Sediments

A workshop for community leaders, public officials, resource managers
and citizens interested in learning how to respond to contaminated
sediments in local water bodies.

deadline is Friday, October 27!

The workshop will illustrate how communities in the Great Lakes Basin
have responded to contaminated sediments in local water bodies.  The
workshop will review common remediation options, major components of the
decision making process, and issues related to human health and habitat
restoration.  Agency representatives and community leaders will discuss
strategies for funding and building public support for contaminated
sediment activities in local water bodies.

The workshop will showcase sediment remediation efforts in Saginaw
River, MI; Ashtabula River, OH; Waukegan Harbor, IL; and Muskegon Lake
and White Lake, MI.

Keynote luncheon speakers will include Congressman Peter Hoekstra
(R-Holland) and Jeff Alexander, award-winning environmental reporter for
The Muskegon Chronicle.  They will offer unique local media and federal
legislative perspectives on the cleanup of polluted sediments in the
Great Lakes.

A special reception will be held at the Muskegon County Museum for
workshop attendees and their guests.  Museum curator John McGarry will
discuss the museum’s new exhibit, “Coming to the Lakes.”

The workshop is open to all interested parties and is particularly
relevant for community leaders, resource managers, public officials, and
citizens interested in learning how to respond to contaminated sediments
in their local river, lake or bay.  The workshop registration fee is $35
and includes lunch, continental breakfast, the evening reception and all
workshop materials.
