Grants Available for Great Lakes Projects in Wisconsin 

Communities, nonprofit organizations and schools are invited to apply for a
Coastal Management Grant from the Wisconsin Coastal Management Program
(WCMP) in the state Department of Administration (DOA).  Grants are
available for coastal resource protection projects and to develop public
access sites along the Great Lakes.  Approximately $750,000 is available for
projects in Wisconsin counties on Lake Michigan and Lake Superior.

The grant program is part of the state's efforts to assist coastal
communities address opportunities and challenges of the Great Lakes area.
Brian A. Schimming, Administrator of the Division of Housing and
Intergovernmental Relations, explained that "It is important for us to
recognize the unique contribution Lakes Michigan and Superior make to the
character of our state and to support local initiatives that promote
balanced protection and use of these resources." 

Past projects that have been funded in part by the program include wetland
studies in Manitowoc County, educational displays at the Northern Great
Lakes Visitor Center in Ashland, and land use planning in Bayfield County.  

Grant workshops have been scheduled for potential applicants to discuss
their projects with staff from the WCMP and coastal Regional Planning
Commissions.  Workshops will be held at the following times and places:

November 27, 2000, 1:30 P.M.
Brown County Public Library
515 Pine Street, Green Bay

December 5, 2000, 9:00 A.M.
Northern Great Lakes Visitor Center
29270 County G, Ashland

December 8, 2000, 10:00 A.M.
South Milwaukee Public Library
1907 Tenth Avenue, Room 1, South Milwaukee
