Shiga-Michigan Joint Symposium 2001

Because of the growing importance of healthy freshwater resources and
ecosystems, the sound management of lakes under increasing human impact is
an inevitable task for our society. Efforts have been made to control water
pollution and restore lake ecosystems in many countries. In many cases,
governmental countermeasures have effectively relieved serious
environ-mental problems originating from industrial activities. However, due
to the lack of effective countermeasures, little recovery has been made with
respect to
deterioration of lake ecosystems caused by nutrient and other contaminant
loadings from diffuse sources such as urban and agricultural runoff.

Because of the importance of agriculture and tourism, Michigan and Shiga, as
sister states, share similar situations relative to the environmental
problems of lake-watershed ecosystems. To examine the current environmental
problems of lake-watershed ecosystems and identify the urgent research tasks
required to solve these problems, the Shiga-Michigan Joint Symposium "Toward
Sustainable Management of Lake-Watershed Ecosystems" will be convened at
Hikone, Japan on July 19-20, 2001, under the auspices of the University of
Shiga Prefecture and selected State Universities of Michigan.

The Organizing Committee is very pleased to invite you to participate in
this Shiga-Michigan Joint Symposium 2001.
