GLIN==> The Eco-Pals Great Lakes Watershed Program

Posted on behalf of Rita Banach <grgr@sympatico.ca>

---
The ECO-PALS program is a pen-pal program with an environmental theme. It
is available to elementary and junior high schools in all areas of the Great
Lakes Watershed, including classes on the north (Canadian side) and on the
American (south side). Up to 500 classes will be twinned in September 2001
in this unique program. The over-riding theme will be about sustaining life
in the Great Lakes Watershed area. Each class will exchange information
about their local community and eco-system with their assigned 'pals'.
Every effort will be made to match classes from as diverse areas of the
watershed as possible.

Each participating class is required to communicate with their twined class
at least three times over the course of the year, responding to specific
assignments on environmental themes within deadlines set by the program.
Participating classes are invited to send letters, audio or video tapes,
artwork, creative writing, and more to their 'pals'.

At each step of the way, detailed instructions and suggestions are provided
by THE GREEN GROUP.

The ECO-PALS program provides a great opportunity for sharing information,
and learning about environmental concerns and activities in other regions of
the Great Lakes Watershed. The program reinforces communication skills and
increases knowledge about the geography, history and peoples of the two
countries involved in the program. Teachers especially appreciate the
opportunities to give practical application to students' newly developed
technological skills (eg. keyboarding, internet research, e-mailing), media
applications (eg. digital photography, video-taping), science/environmental
studies and much more.
