SUSTAINABLE AGRICULTURE AND LIVESTOCK MANAGEMENT
------------------------------------------------
The Northeast-Midwest Coalition on Tuesday, March 20, will host a briefing on sustainable agriculture and livestock management.  The
briefing will feature presentations by farmers and farm groups from
throughout the Northeast and Midwest who have implemented management-
intensive grazing systems on their lands.  Background information also will be provided on how the proposed Conservation Security Act  would help farmers using, or wishing to establish, managed grazing systems and other sustainable agricultural practices.

The March 20 briefing will run from 3:00 pm until 4:30 pm in room SC-4 of the U.S. Capitol.

MANUFACTURING EXTENSION PARTNERSHIP
-----------------------------------
Senators Olympia Snowe (R-ME) and Joseph Lieberman (D-CT) are
seeking signatures by April 6 on a letter asking appropriators to
provide $105 million in fiscal 2002 for the Manufacturing Extension
Partnership (MEP).  Started in 1988 as a bipartisan initiative under
former President George Bush, MEP helps small and mid-size businesses connect with experts who help them in a range of  activities, from improving administrative management to enhancing plant efficiency.

SMART GROWTH
------------
Senators James Jeffords (R-VT) and Carl Levin (D-MI) this week
will send a letter to the president about the importance of smart
growth to states and communities across the country.  The co-chairs of the Senate Smart Growth Task Force encourage the president to
establish an interagency Smart Growth Working Group in order to
improve federal coordination on crosscutting issues impacting growth
management.  They also seek support for legislation, appropriations,
and incentives to help communities plan for and manage growth.
