GLIN==> State of the Great Lakes 2000 Annual Report

Governor Releases Annual Report on Great Lakes

On April 10, 2001, Governor John Engler released the annual report on the state of the Great Lakes for 2000. The report focuses on the interaction of the Great Lakes with their tributary rivers in Michigan. It is the eighth such report issued by his administration.

Previously, Governor Engler had declared June 2000 as Michigan Rivers Month in recognition of the 30th anniversary of the Natural Rivers Act, which protects 1,698 miles on 14 river systems statewide.

Some of the specific topics discussed in the report are:
 - The natural flow regime as an organizing principle for Greta Lakes restoration;
 - Environmental benefits of removing dysfunctional dams on tributary rivers;
 - The establishment of the Muskegon River Watershed Partnership, a collaborative restoration project recently initiated by the Peter M. Wege Foundation;
 - Progress on the Greater Detroit American Heritage River Initiative and the Lake Sturgeon Project;
 - Results of recent surveys of native freshwater mussels in the Grand and St. Joseph Rivers.

Other articles of interest in the report include the recent Great Lakes Tribal Fishing agreement, the new Thunder Bay National Marine Sanctuary and Underwater Preserve, and the recent creation of an alliance of land conservancies in Michigan to protect Lakes Michigan's sand dunes.

A special feature of the report is a photographic chronical of the dismantling of the Big Rapids Dam on the Muskegon River, which generated power as far back as 1912, but fell into disrepair in recent years.
