Expanding the Horizons of Health: A Primer on Ecosystem Health

June 5-8, 2001
The University of Western Ontario
London, Ontario

Ecosystem health is a comprehensive and integrative approach which reflects
not only human health, but also that of the living and non-living world
around us. It expands the traditional definitions of health, and recognizes
the critical linkages between human activity, ecological change, and health.

This primer course will be an exciting opportunity to explore the different
elements that comprise ecosystem health, including current definitions and
practices of health, ecology, economics, and socio-politics. Course tutors
will include: Jonathan Patz (Johns Hopkins School of Public Health), Tom
Hutchinson (Environmental Resource Studies, Trent University), Robert
Costanza (Institute for Ecological Economics, University of Maryland), and
Bruce Wilcox (John A. Burns School of Medicine, University of Hawaii).

One highlight of the course will be a case study analysis, which will
provide participants with practical experience in exploring and analyzing
ecosystem problems. Participants will include professionals and students
from across the natural, social, and health sciences, who would like to
develop their knowledge and understanding of ecosystem health.
