Shipwreck Preserve Opened for 2001 Diving Season

OSWEGO, NY -- The New York State David W. Mills Submerged Cultural Preserve
and Dive Site is open for the summer diving season. On Sunday, May 20,
scuba divers with the Oswego Maritime Foundation placed a mooring buoy on
the shipwreck site, located four and one-half miles west of Oswego Harbor.

The mooring buoy allows divers to easily find and access the wreck, without
anchoring or grappling the sunken ship. The shallow clear water also allows
non-divers and snorkelers to enjoy the preserve and see the 19th century
vessel. Access is free and unrestricted.

Thanks to the preservation qualities of the Great Lakes cool fresh water,
visitors to the dive site can examine the ship's 180-foot keel, 11-foot
propeller, winch, anchors, boiler, engine, and sections of hull.

The wooden steam freighter David W. Mills ran aground and broke apart in
1919 on Ford Shoal, one mile offshore of Oswego Town. Built in 1874, the
Mills carried lumber and coal throughout the Great Lakes.

In 1993, volunteers with New York Sea Grant and the Oswego Maritime
Foundation (OMF) began documenting the wreck site.

Last May, the wreck site became the state's first underwater preserve in the
Great Lakes. The event was commemorated with an underwater ribbon-cutting
ceremony broadcast live to a local evening news program. See

Marine, WIXT NewsChannel 9, and dozens of volunteers helped coordinate the
television event.
