BRIEFING:  ENERGY AND TRANSPORTATION
------------------------------------
The Senate Smart Growth Task Force on Monday, June 25, will host
a briefing on the interconnections between transportation and energy,
which are lifelines for the social and economic health of communities.
For all the benefits provided by the U.S. transportation system,
traffic congestion is costing Americans $78 billion a year in wasted
fuel, and fuels burned for transportation contribute to air pollution.

The briefing will examine the energy problems associated with the
U.S. ground transportation system, smart growth strategies to help
address transportation and energy concerns, and federal government
initiatives to improve transportation's energy efficiency.  The June
25 briefing will begin at 3:30 pm in 236 Russell Senate Office
Building.

BRIEFING:  BROWNFIELD SHOWCASE COMMUNITIES
------------------------------------------
The Northeast Midwest Congressional Coalition and National
Association of Local Government Environmental Professionals on
Wednesday, June 27, will host a briefing on the 28 brownfield showcase
communities.  Special attention will be given to Stamford, CT; Niagara,
NY; and Eastward Ho!, FL; and representatives will be present from
showcase projects in Chicago, IL; Lowell, MA; Baltimore, MD; and St.
Louis, MO.

The June 27 briefing will begin at 11:00 am in 2318 Rayburn House
Office Building. Reps. Jack Quinn (R-NY) and Marty Meehan (D-MA), co-
chairs of the Northeast-Midwest Congressional Coalition, will make
opening remarks.

RECEPTION:  COMBINED HEAT AND POWER DAY
---------------------------------------
The U.S. Combined Heat and Power Association, of which the
Northeast-Midwest Institute is a founding member, is hosting a Capitol
Hill Day on Wednesday, June 27.  A reception for lawmakers and
congressional staff will be held that evening from 5:30 pm until 7:00
pm in the LBJ Room off the Senate floor.

The Northeast Midwest Coalitions are seeking co-sponsors for
legislation (H.R. 1945 and S. 933) to promote combined heat and power
(CHP), or cogeneration, a means of generating electricity, heat, and
cooling at efficiency rates more than double that of conventional
technology.  The bills would ensure that CHP systems can interconnect
to the electricity grid and have access to back-up power at reasonable
rates. The House bill also includes a tax incentive to encourage the
installation of CHP technologies.

CONTACTS:  Olwen Huxley at the Northeast-Midwest Congressional
Coalition (226-9497) regarding the legislation, and John Jimison with
USCHPA regarding the reception (728-9049 or uschpa@admgt.com).
