MEDIA ADVISORY

First Ship to Test Ballast Water Opens for Tour Wednesday at Detroit Port

The first ship to be outfitted for ballast water treatment and testing will
open for a tour by state officials and members of the media at 10 a.m. on
Wednesday, Aug. 22. The treatment and testing of ballast water will keep
foreign species from entering the Great Lakes through the shipping trade.

Lt. Governor Dick Posthumus will host a news conference on-board the Federal
Yukon, followed by a tour of the 36,500-ton ship. The ship is docked at the
Detroit Port Authority's Scotten Street Terminal, located one mile south of
the Ambassador Bridge.

(Directions to Scotten Street Terminal from downtown Detroit: Take Fort
Street South to Scotten Street (3 miles), turn left on Scotten Street;
continue 2 blocks into the terminal.)
