****************CONFERENCE BACKGROUND****************

The St. Lawrence River Institute of Environmental Sciences is pleased to
announce its first call for papers for the 9th Annual International
Conference on the St. Lawrence River Ecosystem, to be hosted this year in
partnership with Queen's University.

This year's conference theme on Brownfield Developments highlights the
challenges that all communities in the Great Lakes and St. Lawrence River
systems face in revitalizing waterfronts and nearby lands affected by past
industrial and other human activities. Issues relating to this topic range
from risk assessment and remediation of contaminated sediments and
waterfront lands to assessing appropriate land uses for Brownfield sites.
We invite scientists, specialist, land developers, students and managers
to present their research on this and other topics relevant to the Great
Lakes & St. Lawrence River Ecosystem. This two-day event will be held on
May 7-8th, 2002 at the NavCanada Conference & Training Centre in Cornwall,
Ontario, Canada.
It is anticipated that the wealth of information exchanged in such an
international conference will be of great benefit to all involved with St.
Lawrence River Ecosystem challenges.

Dr. Chapman is an aquatic ecologist and ecotoxicologist. He began working
on contaminated sediments in the 1970s, developing various approaches to
