PRESENT THE 1ST ANNUAL INVASIVE SPECIES FIELD COURSE

Be a part of this exciting new program in the summer of 2002, designed for
educators, regulators, environmentalists and citizens in the Great Lakes
Region.

The United States Environmental Protection Agency has recently granted
Inland Seas Education Association (ISEA) and Environmental Solutions Inc.
(ESI) a federal project grant for monitoring invasive species in Lake
Michigan and for the development of a three-day Invasive Species Field
Course in Grand Traverse Bay.  The course will be designed to teach
educators, regulators, environmentalists and citizens in the Great Lakes
Region about the nature of the invasive species problem.  One of the goals
of the course will be to create teaching modules that will extend the
reach of the project into classrooms and community groups throughout the
Great Lakes Region.

The three-day Invasive Species Field Course will take place on June 17-19,
2002 and food and lodging will be provided. The course will be a unique
combination of hands-on field sampling aboard ISEA's 77' schooner Inland
Seas and shoreside activities with professional seminars in the Grand
Traverse Bay area.  Emphasis will be on "prevention through education".
Educational materials will focus on the resolution of invasive species
issues including commerce, economics and alternatives for redemption.
Specific topics that will be addressed in the three-day Invasive Species
Field Course include:

*  The history of invasions
*  Natural range expansion
*  Lakewide Management Plan indicators and goals
*  Human assisted vectors, intentional & unintentional invasion
*  Effects of canal building in Europe and America
*  Growth of trade and present water-based trade patterns
*  The shippers perspective
*  Comparison of Great Lakes ecosystem prior to European contact and the
  present-day system
*  Sampling techniques for detecting exotic species in the Great Lakes
environment
*  Qualitative water sampling methods and requirements
*  Teaching strategies for invasive species education in the classroom
*  Design of unique invasive species teaching modules for students of all
ages

At the conclusion of the Invasive Species Field Course, participants will
be well prepared to share the information and educational materials
provided in the course with students and citizens in their home area.
Participants will also be asked for input on course improvement and
updates.

Concurrent with the Invasive Species Field Course and other ISEA shipboard
educational programs during the summer of 2002, the teaching/research
vessel Inland Seas will be used to establish a monitoring program of
receptor sites to detect invasive species in Lake Michigan waters.  ISEA
will report on the status of invasive species within these areas throughout
 the summer of 2002, making its findings available to teachers, regulators
and the general public on its website: www.schoolship.org.

Principal investigators for the project will be ISEA Biologist/Education
Director Colleen Masterson and Diane Lundin, Industrial Management
Specialist of ESI.
