SAGINAW BAY WIN RECEIVING PROPOSALS
www.saginawbaywin.org

The Saginaw Bay Watershed Initiative Network (WIN) is a watershed-based
sustainability effort initiated by a variety of environmental, business, and
community interests in 1996. The Saginaw Bay Watershed drains 8,700 square
miles of Michigan's lower peninsula, encompasses all or part of 22 counties,
and is home to nearly 1.5 million people. Michigan's largest watershed is
home to 138 threatened or endangered species and contains the largest
contiguous freshwater wetland system in the United States.

WIN was created to stimulate and coordinate a community-driven quality of
life initiative in the watershed. The quality of life discussion takes place
within the framework of sustainability and encompasses economic,
environmental, and social considerations.

In cooperation with 13 corporations and foundations that make up the WIN
Funders Network, WIN is currently seeking proposals from nonprofit
organizations for projects that demonstrate sustainable concepts in the
region. Innovative projects in areas such as wildlife habitat and
stewardship, land use, water resources, agriculture / pollution prevention,
communications and education, and sustainable business strategies are
eligible for funding.

To date, WIN has provided over $1,000,000 to support projects that help to
identify the Saginaw Bay Watershed as a sustainable community. Funding is
provided for projects that create opportunities to connect people,
resources, organizations and programs. Priority is given to projects that
are innovative, cross governmental boundaries, and attempt to balance the
environment, economy, and the community. WIN grants have been matched by
more than $1.2 million in other funding.

Pre-proposals are now being accepted for WIN's Spring 2002 funding round.
