The Summer 2002 university course schedule at F. T. Stone Laboratory
includes a special offering entitled NR/CE 797: Digital and Field
Technologies for Coastal Environment Studies. The course, sponsored by the
National Science Foundation, is intended for Juniors and Seniors in
environmental sciences or engineering, and PhD students planning to TEACH in
either of those areas.

Sessions will focus on Earth systems, emphasizing relationships among the
hydrosphere, atmosphere, lithosphere and biosphere of coastal and offshore
areas. The course will be taught by a combination of high-tech, high-touch
tools - satellite imagery, datasets on-line, GIS, digital models - as well
as traditional field technologies for environmental measurements and
observation.

Class dates are MWF from June 23 - July 24, 2002. The sessions are from 8 AM
to 4 PM, on Gibraltar Island in Lake Erie.

Twelve undergraduates and 6 PhD students will be selected for participation
to include..

* Training in use of GIS and application to coastal issues

* Field study techniques for ground truth and social implications

* Collaborative activities between scientists and engineers

* Alternative grading (projects, portfolios, demonstrations)

Room and board for 5 weeks in Stone Lab's excellent facilities will be
provided by NSF. Regular tuition for 5 credits (quarter system, graduate or
undergraduate) is required. See the Stone Lab web site for tuition rates
(http://www.sg.ohio-state.edu/slab/o-slab.html). Tuition waivers from CIC
and other institutions may apply.

Instructors: Dr. Rosanne W. Fortner, Natural Resources and Dr. Carolyn J.
Merry, Civil and Environmental Engineering and Geodetic Science.

Prerequisites: Junior or senior standing in engineering or sciences of the
environment, GPA >2.7. PhD students from throughout the region who expect
to teach as part of their career are encouraged to apply. Special projects
in teaching/learning will be offered.

TO APPLY: Contact Dr. Fortner at Fortner.2@osu.edu or visit the course web
