Background:  Many Canadians who own ecologically sensitive land have no
guarantee that the piece of nature they have cherished for years will be
cared for in the future.  Through the Ecological Gifts Program, private and
corporate landowners who donate land, a conservation easement or a covenant
through the Ecological Gifts Program, can receive a tax receipt for the
value of the donation  which can be used against 100 percent of their annual
income to generate tax benefits.  Any unused portion of this receipt can be
carried forward up to five subsequent years.  Only 25 percent of the value
of capital gains is subject to income tax.
